(Nov. 4, 2016) – Take a look inside The Breakdown, where each Friday, we look back at the week in Breakers news. This week proved to be another big one for the Breakers off the field!

It all began Monday, the Boston Breakers announced the signing of Norwegian forward Emilie Haavi. The 24-year-old from Baerum, Norway most recently played for Lillestrøm SK Kvinner (LSK Kvinner) in Norway’s top-flight league, Toppserien. In four seasons with LSK (2013-2016), Haavi scored 49 goals in 82 games, helping her club win both the Toppserien and Norwegian Cup in 2014 and 2015. Haavi previously played for Røa (2009-2012) and won one Toppserien championship and one Norwegian Cup for the Western Norway based club. In 51 games with Røa, Haavi scored 39 goals.

“Emilie is a player that I have been watching for the past few years. She is an exciting, pacey winger who will be a great addition to the team,” Boston Breakers head coach Matt Beard said. “She has been a key part of LSK and her national team, playing in the Champions League and major tournaments.”

On the international level, Haavi has represented Norway at the 2011 and 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cups. She played all three group-stage matches in 2015, and in 2011, she scored the game-winner against Equatorial Guinea in the group stage. Haavi made her debut for Norway in 2010 against Canada. Capped 59 times for Norway, Haavi has scored 15 goals for her country.

On Thursday, the Boston Breakers acquired midfielder Amanda Da Costa from the Chicago Red Stars. In exchange, Boston sent back to Chicago their natural third (No. 28 overall) and fourth-round (No. 38 overall) picks in the 2017 NWSL College Draft that Boston picked up in a previous trade. The 27-year-old Katonah, N.Y. native is no stranger to the Breakers and head coach Matt Beard, having played for Boston during the 2012 WPSL Elite season and then for Beard at Liverpool in both 2013 and 2014. She helped lead the Liverpool Ladies to back-to-back FA Women’s Super League titles.

“Amanda is a great person, and she will be a great addition to our roster. During our time at Liverpool she was a key player for me,” Beard said. “Technically, she is very gifted and she is a clever soccer player.”

The past two seasons, Da Costa has played in the NWSL, first for the Washington Spirit in 2015 where she scored three goals on four shots on goal in 17 appearances. In 2016 with the Chicago Red Stars, Da Costa started eight of the 13 matches she appeared in. In two NWSL seasons, Da Costa has 30 appearances, 15 starts, and has logged 1,311 minutes with three goals scored. At Liverpool, Da Costa made more than 40 appearances and was part of the first Liverpool Ladies team to compete in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. With the Boston Breakers during the 2012 WPSL Elite season, Da Costa started all eight matches she appeared in, playing 709 minutes. She tallied one assist.

On the international level, Da Costa began playing for the Portuguese Women’s National Team in 2015, debuting on Dec. 1 against Spain in the Women’s Euro 2017 qualifiers. This past year with Portugal, Da Costa played in the Algarve Cup in March and in the recent Euro 2017 qualifiers, helping to lead Portugal to the final stages.
