Late Seattle goal sinks Breakers

Boston suffers 2-1 defeat at home

The Seattle Reign spoiled the Breakers bid for their first win since May 25 with a 2-1, come-from-behind win Wednesday night at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville. With the loss, the Breakers move to 3-5-3, while the Reign picked up their first win and improved to 1-9-2.

The Seattle Reign spoiled the Breakers bid for their first win since May 25 with a 2-1, come-from-behind win Wednesday night at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville. With the loss, the Breakers fall to 3-5-3, while the Reign picked up their first win and improved to 1-9-2.

"I thought we had a good game plan, and I also thought we got a little bit unlucky," Breakers Head Coach Lisa Cole said. "I think Seattle is going to steal a lot of wins from (teams). We have to take some accountability. We’re doing some things really well, but we’ve got to play well for 90 minutes. I thought we started better and didn’t give up an early goal. There were some positives in the game, but we’ve got to find some wins."

In front of 2,012 fans, the Breakers took a 1-0 lead in the 51st minute on a goal by midfielder Mariah Nogueira. For the former Stanford star and Boston’s second overall pick in NWSL Draft, it was her first professional goal. It came off a header that began with a Katie Schoepfer corner kick, which then pinged off a player in the box before Nogueira flicked it past Reign keeper Hope Solo.

The Breakers maintained the lead for the next 25 minutes before Seattle threatened and eventually leveled the game in the 78th minute. Megan Rapinoe, who had been dangerous all night for Seattle, took a free kick from 20 yards out. The sharply driven ball was saved by Breakers keeper Alyssa Naeher, but the ball bounced back out in front of goal, and that’s where Jessica Fishlock pounced on the rebound to net her second goal of the season.

Seattle scored the game-winner in the 86th minute. Former Breaker Liz Bogus crossed to Christine Nairn, who one-timed it past Naeher for the 2-1 lead. One minute later, the Breakers nearly tied the game after Heather O’Reilly sent a cross to the back post, finding Sydney Leroux, who headed it to the center of the box. Kyah Simon got on the end of Leroux’s header and attempted to head it past Solo, but the ball went just wide of the post.

Both teams had a handful of chances in the first half. O’Reilly got on the end of a cross from Rhian Wilkinson, only to see her shot stopped by Solo in the seventh minute. Two minutes later, Rapinoe blasted a shot that nearly skimmed the post before sailing out of play. In the 19th minute, O’Reilly rocketed a shot on goal, but Solo made a diving stop. Cat Whitehill had a header saved in the 30th minute. In the 33rd minute, Teresa Noyola tried putting Seattle ahead on a stunning half volley, but Naeher denied her.

The best chance the Breakers had early in the second half came in the 47th minute when Maddy Evans played a ball over the top to O’Reilly. O’Reilly’s took a shot from inside the box, but Solo made a sprawling save. The ball trickled past Solo, but then hit the post.

The Breakers return to action Sunday night to take on first-place Sky Blue FC at home, 6:30 p.m. ET at Dilboy Stadium.
