(Sept. 12, 2013) - Boston Breakers midfielder Joanna Lohman and midfielder/forward Lianne Sanderson have gone out on loan to Apollon Limassol LFC until February 2014.
Lohman and Sanderson will join the Cyprus champions ahead of the club’s UEFA Women’s Champions League match against Austria’s SV Neulengbach in the Round of 32 (Oct. 9/10 and Oct. 16/17). Apollon is looking to advance to the Round of 16 for the first time in the club’s history.
Lohman and Sanderson recently finished their first season in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL).
Sanderson made 22 appearances (21 starts) and finished with a team-high seven assists and five goals, which tied her for second on the team. Voted the team’s most valuable player, Sanderson tallied 1,913 teammates, second most on the team. Her seven assists ranked her third in the NWSL.

“It’s important for me to keep playing as much as I can in the offseason, and when the opportunity came up, it was a no-brainer. Beautiful country, soccer, and Champions League,” Sanderson said. “Having won the Champions League before, this tournament will always hold a special place in my heart. I am very excited for the future and what’s ahead.”
Sanderson won the Champions League with Arsenal LFC in 2006/2007, a season in which she scored 40 goals in 41 games.
Lohman also played in all 22 games for the Breakers this season, 21 of which she started. Lohman logged 1,897 minutes, third most on the team and was one of only three Breakers to play all 22 games this season. She scored two goals, her first coming in a 1-1 draw at Washington on May 11, and the second on June 16, a 3-2 loss at home to Sky Blue FC.

“Playing for Apollon Limassol is an incredible opportunity. For someone who has never played in the Champions League tournament, I am beyond thrilled to live out one of my childhood dreams all the while joining a great football organization," Lohman said. "Lianne and I will go to Cyprus to make a positive impact and expose ourselves to the wonderful weather and culture."
In Cyprus, Lohman and Sanderson will reunite with three of their former Philadelphia Independence teammates - Kelly Ann Henderson, Tina DiMartino, and Gina DiMartino.
