Kyah Simon's hat trick paces Australia in 9-0 rout of Vietnam

(March 2, 2016)  - Kyah Simon took the captain’s armband for the first time and she made the most of it, scoring three goals in a 9-0 win Wednesday over Vietnam in the second game of AFC Olympic Qualifying.

Australia, who beat Japan, 3-1, on Monday to open the tournament, now sit atop the table with six points. China is second with four points after drawing, 1-1, with North Korea Wednesday. South Korea, who tied Japan, 1-1, Wednesday, and North Korea are tied for third with two points each, followed by Japan (one point), and Vietnam (no points).

All three of Simon’s goals came in the first half, and Australia took a 5-0 lead into the final 45 minutes. The Matildas also got goals from Emily van Egmond (two), Alanna Kennedy, Emily Gielnik, and Claire Polkinghorne.

Australia returns to action on Friday, playing South Korea at 5:35 a.m. ET. A win will qualify Australia for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio.
