(Feb. 20, 2014) - The Boston Breakers announced today a three-game preseason schedule that will see the club take on some of the top colleges in the Northeast: Northeastern University, Boston College, and the University of Connecticut.
"We are very fortunate here in New England to have some fantastic college programs that are able to provide competitive games during the preseason campaign," Boston Breakers general manager Lee Billiard said. "I am always excited to see our local college teams and the next set of players coming through get the opportunity to play against our professional players."
The Breakers open their preseason exhibition schedule March 24 at Northeastern. The Huskies, led by head coach Tracey Leone, won the Colonial Athletic Association championship this past fall by knocking off top seed James Madison, earning a NCAA tournament berth. The Huskies' coaching staff features former Breakers goalkeeper Ashley Phillips and former Breakers defender Lindsay Massengale. The exhibition match against Northeastern takes place on Sunday, March 23 at 7 p.m. at Parsons Field in Brookline, Mass.
On Saturday, March 29, the Breakers face a familiar preseason opponent - Boston College. The Eagles feature one of the top scorers in the Atlantic Coast Conference from this past fall, Stephanie McCaffrey. The forward also played for Boston Breakers College Academy last summer in the Women's Premier Soccer League (WPSL), leading the Breakers with 16 goals. The game is scheduled for a 3 p.m. ET start at 885 Centre St. in Newton, Mass.
On Saturday, April 5, the Breakers play the University of Connecticut at Taunton Forekicks in Taunton, Mass. UConn features recent U.S. U-20 Women's National Team call-up and Breakers College Academy player Stephanie Ribiero.
The Breakers' preseason opponents will feature several players who were members of the Boston Breakers College Academy WPSL team, including McCaffrey, Alexandra Johnson, Casey Morrison, and Patrice Vettori from Boston College; Paige Burnett, Bianca Calderone, Amy Steele, and Hannah O'Donnell from Northeastern; and Ribiero at UConn.
