Breakers set to open 2017 preseason

(March 10, 2017) – The Boston Breakers open up preseason Monday, March 13 to begin preparations for the 2017 National Women’s Soccer League season.

The Breakers start up their second straight preseason under the direction of head coach Matt Beard. They will train at Forekicks in Taunton, Mass.

“As a coaching staff, there has been a lot of preparation going into this preseason. We are looking to hit the ground running so we can set ourselves up for a successful season,” Beard said. “There are many changes to this year’s roster, and we can’t wait to get started.”

Eight players return from last year’s team, including defender Julie King, back for her sixth season in Boston, last year’s leading scorer, forward Natasha Dowie, midfielder Angela Salem, goalkeepers Libby Stout and Abby Smith, and defenders Brooke Elby, Kylie Strom, and Christen Westphal.

The Breakers made several roster additions during the offseason, bringing in four international players: Canadian defender Allysha Chapman, Canadian forward Adriana Leon, Norwegian forward Emilie Haavi, and New Zealand midfielder Rosie White. They also added newly signed midfielder, the No. 1 pick in the 2017 NWSL College Draft, and recently capped U.S. Women’s National Team player, Rose Lavelle, as well as defenders Megan Oyster and Amanda Frisbie, and they brought back two former Breakers – midfielders Amanda Da Costa and Tiffany Weimer.

The Breakers have their first preseason game scheduled for Saturday, March 25, a closed-door scrimmage against Boston College. They then play NEFC U-15 boys (March 28), the University of Connecticut (April 1), and Sky Blue FC (April 4 – closed door).
