(April 14, 2017) – The Boston Breakers embark on their fifth National Women’s Soccer League season Sunday, taking on FC Kansas City on the road. The match, which takes place at Swope Soccer Village in Kansas City, Mo., kicks off at 6 p.m. ET. The match can be seen on go90.com or via the go90 app (U.S. only) and NWSLsoccer.com (international fans).
“We’ve had a good and positive preseason. Going to Kansas is going to be tough, but as a group we are looking forward to getting our season started,” Boston Breakers head coach Matt Beard said. “Kansas is an organized team and are a real threat in the forward positions.”
The new-look Breakers feature 13 new players from a year ago, a group that includes the No. 1 overall pick in the 2017 NWSL College Draft, midfielder Rose Lavelle, and defender Megan Oyster. The duo recently played for the U.S. Women’s National Team with Lavelle scoring her first goal and notching her first assist in a series against Russia. Oyster made her U.S. debut in the first match against Russia.
“With so many new faces, we are just going to take it game by game and make sure that we improve on each performance,” Beard said.
The Breakers also feature last year’s leading scorer, forward Natasha Dowie, who tallied three goals in seven games after joining the Breakers halfway through the season. Defender Julie King returns for her sixth season with the Breakers. King will serve as captain, and Dowie is vice captain this season. Goalkeepers Libby Stout and Abby Smith are back for their second season in Boston. Other returnees include defenders Christen Westphal, Brooke Elby, and Kylie Strom, midfielder Angela Salem.
The Breakers and FC Kansas City will meet for the 12th time. Although The Blues hold a 7-4-0 advantage, the Breakers have won two straight. The last meeting came on Aug. 28, 2016, on the road. The Breakers won, 2-0, getting goals from Katie Schoepfer and Kristie Mewis. On May 22, 2016, at home, the Breakers secured a 1-0 win courtesy of a goal from Whitney Engen. Stout earned the shutout, her first clean sheet and first victory as a Breaker.
This year’s FC Kansas City team features U.S. Women’s National Team defender Becky Sauerbrunn and forwards Amy Rodriguez and Sydney Leroux in addition to last year’s team-leading scorer Shea Groom, who scored eight goals for the Blues in 2016.
The Breakers return to Boston on Sunday, April 23, at 4 p.m. ET for their 2017 home opener against Sky Blue FC. Tickets are available by calling 617-945-1704 or by visiting breakerstickets.com.
