GAME NOTES

“We are looking forward to challenge that Kansas City presents,” Boston Breakers head coach Matt Beard said. “We are determined to turn our good performances into points now.”

In a score that did not reflect the stat sheet, the Breakers lost to Sky Blue in a tight 1-0 match last Friday night at Yurcak Field. Building on offensive momentum after the Breakers outshot Sky Blue FC, 13-9, Boston will look to capitalize on its scoring opportunities against ninth-place FC Kansas City.

In recent weeks, the Breakers defending has kept them in matches. Much of this is a result of the goalkeeping performances of Libby Stout and Abby Smith. Against Sky Blue, Stout had five saves and now leads the NWSL in saves with 17. After Smith suffered a season-ending knee injury on May 7, Stout is now joined by the recent signing of keeper Jami Kranich.

With a record of 0-3-2, the back-to-back NWSL champions FC Kansas City are only two points above the Breakers in the NWSL table. The Blues are coming off a 0-0 draw to the Chicago Red Stars last week. FC Kansas City couldn’t put one away against Chicago despite having 12 shots, five of which were on goal.

The last Breakers’ victory against FC Kansas City was May 30, 2015, a 1-0 win at home. During the 2015 season, the two teams met three times with a total of nine goals scored between them.

The Breakers hit the road after Sunday’s game, visiting the Western New York Flash on Friday, May 27, at 7 p.m. ET before returning home to face the Washington Spirit on June 10 at 7 p.m. ET. Tickets can be purchased by calling 617-945-1704 or by visiting breakerstickets.com.
