(Oct. 27, 2016) – The Boston Breakers announced today the re-signing of defender Julie King. Per team and league policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
In 2017, King will return for her sixth season as a Breaker. She debuted in 2012 in WPSL Elite. In five seasons with the Breakers, the 27-year-old St. Louis, Mo. native has 88 appearances, including 82 starts. She’s logged 7,462 minutes and has five goals and four assists.
“Julie was a key player for us last year, and it was important that we kept her for 2017,” Boston Breakers head coach Matt Beard said. “I am looking forward to seeing Julie progress further as a player and be a key part of the Boston Breakers for 2017.”
Voted Team Most Valuable Player in 2016, King started 17 of the 18 matches she appeared in, playing 1,523 minutes. She was one of only four Breakers to play more than 1,500 minutes in 2016. King matched a career high for goals in a single-season with two. She also tallied one assist, giving her the most points in a season during her professional career.
“I'm very excited and grateful for the opportunity to continue my professional soccer career with the Breakers. I've had numerous conversations with management and staff over the past month about the future of the Breakers and changes that are in motion," King said. "After these conversations and thoughtful consideration, I believe that the organization is committed to doing what it takes to elevate the Breakers to the top of the table, and I'm eager to be a part of that. The way our fans have embraced and supported the team, as well as me personally, over my last five seasons has helped to make Boston feel like home to me, and I'm determined to do everything possible to help win a championship here.”
King’s 88 appearances ranks her third all-time in franchise history, seven behind Katie Schoepfer (95) and 14 back of Kristine Lilly (102).
