(March 25, 2017) – The Boston Breakers kicked off their 2017 preseason with a 5-1 win over Boston College Saturday afternoon, getting three goals from Adriana Leon and a goal and assist from rookie Ifeoma Onumonu.

“We’re pleased with the result and to get some goals today. It’s a good start for us,” Boston Breakers head coach Matt Beard said. “We’re nowhere near the level we can get to. (But) from my perspective that’s good that we’ve got a starting base and we can move on from there.”

The Breakers opened the scoring just two minutes into the match. Rookie Rose Lavelle crossed to the far post, where Leon came racing up to knock it in and give the Breakers an early advantage.

Boston College had a free kick four minutes later on the edge of the box, but the shot was blocked by Christen Westphal, ending the Eagles’ first threat.

In the 12th minute, Westphal cut into the box before sending a cross to Leon, who fired on goal but was denied. Four minutes later, Natasha Dowie’s first shot of the game landed on goal as the Breakers continued looking for a second tally early on. That nearly came in the 28th minute after Lavelle picked up the rebound of a Dowie shot and put it on goal, forcing a save out of Boston College.

The Eagles tied the game in the 31st minute after a slip in the back line put BC through one on one with Abby Smith before rounding the keeper and slotting it home.

The Breakers tried responding quickly after the game-tying goal. Thirty seconds after the Eagles scored, Leon played a through ball to Emilie Haavi, but the shot went just wide. Leon played Lavelle through in the 42nd minute, which nearly resulted in a goal, but Boston College just beat Lavelle to the ball.

Leon scored her second goal of the game in the 68th minute, getting an assist from Onumonu. She capped her hat trick in the 86th minute, slotting a ball played to her from Angela Salem right into goal. The Breakers made it a 4-1 game in the 88th minute when former Boston College forward Hayley Dowd set up Rosie White in front of goal. The scoring was capped in the 90th minute when Onumonu put home a pass from Allysha Chapman.

Three rookies accounted for a goal and three assists today. That group included Onumonu, who had a goal and an assist after coming on to start the second half.

“I thought Ife would come on and cause a lot of problems. That’s exactly why we drafted her,” Beard said. “She’s direct. She’s strong. She had a goal and assist and could’ve had a few more, so that was pleasing.”

The Breakers return to action Tuesday, March 28, at 7 p.m. ET against the New England Futbol Club boys. The match takes place at Forekicks in Taunton, Mass.
