Breakers look to complete season sweep of Spirit Saturday

(Sept. 22, 2017) — The Boston Breakers head down to the Maryland SoccerPlex in Boyds, Md. Saturday to take on the Washington Spirit in their final road game of the 2017 National Women’s Soccer League season. The match is set for a 7 p.m. ET kickoff.


With a win or draw against the Spirit, the Breakers will complete a season sweep of Washington. The teams played to a 2-2 draw Aug. 12 at the Plex, with the Breakers getting a pair of goals from Adriana Leon. The first meeting of the season – July 1 at Jordan Field in Allston, Mass. – saw the Breakers take a 1-0 win over the Spirit. The 1-0 victory came from a goal courtesy of rookie forward Midge Purce, who came into the game in the 62nd minute. Goalkeeper Sammy Jo Prudhomme made five saves to record her second shutout of the season.

“It is a must-win game for us. We want to finish our season off with two wins and 22 points,” Boston Breakers head coach Matt Beard said. “We can take a lot of confidence from our performance against Portland. We just need to be more composed in front of goal and take our chances. The girls have trained really well all week, and we are looking forward to the game.”

Boston leads the overall series, 5-2-6, and are 1-1-4 at the Plex against the Spirit.

The Breakers are coming off a tough, 1-0 loss to Portland Thorns FC, a game in which the Breakers outshot Portland, 17-3, and controlled possession throughout. The Spirit, meanwhile, return to the field coming off a 2-1 win over Sky Blue FC on the road. The Spirit are led by Havana Solaun (five goals, three assists), Cheyna Williams (five goals, one assist), and Mallory Pugh (four goals, one assist).

In addition to Leon (five goals, five assists), the Breakers are paced by Natasha Dowie (four goals, two assists) and Rosie White (four goals, one assist). They’ve also gotten production in the final third from defender and captain Julie King (one goal), midfielder Rose Lavelle (two goals, one assist) and Purce (one goal, one assist).

Following Saturday’s game, the Breakers return home for their season finale Sept. 30 against Sky Blue FC (7 p.m. ET).
