First hat trick in league history sent Boston past Chicago

Boston Breakers forward Sydney Leroux was voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the media for Week 4 of the 2013 NWSL season.

Boston Breakers forward Sydney Leroux was voted the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Player of the Week by the media for Week 4 of the 2013 NWSL season.

Leroux, who turned 23 years old Tuesday, netted the first hat trick in NWSL history in a 4-1 home victory for the Breakers over the Chicago Red Stars on Saturday at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville, Mass.

The Scottsdale, Ariz. native scored Boston’s final three goals in the victory – including two goals in 10 minutes in the second half to secure the result.

“It’s exciting, especially because HAO just got it last week,” Leroux said in reference to Breakers teammate Heather O’Reilly earning Player of the Week honors a week ago. “My teammates helped me put some numbers on the board, and Katie (Schoepfer) started it off for us with huge opening goal.”

Leroux is the second consecutive Breakers player to be honored as the NWSL Player of the Week after midfielder Heather O’Reilly claimed the award for Week 3 with a two-goal performance against the Western New York Flash.

The Boston Breakers will return to action Saturday, May 11 at 7 p.m. ET against the Washington Spirit at the Maryland Soccerplex in Germantown, Md.

The NWSL Player of the Week is selected each week of the regular season by a selection of journalists that cover the league on a consistent basis.
