(Aug. 26, 2017) — The Boston Breakers dropped a 1-0 decision on the road Saturday night in Piscataway, N.J., falling to Sky Blue FC at Yurcak Field.
“It’s frustrating. I thought we created the better chances over the course of the game,” Boston Breakers head coach Matt Beard said. “I felt we responded well to the (goal). It’s frustrating on our end. We created three to four good chances, and we’ve not managed to put the ball in the back of the net.”
The opportunities came in both half for both teams. The first shot of the second half came off the foot of Sky Blue forward Madison Tiernan, who came into the box and hit it low and to Abby Smith’s left. Smith lunged to make the stop and end the 55th-minute threat. In the 62nd minute, Smith was tested again, this time by Sam Kerr, but she managed to get a foot on the shot to make the save.
Defender Allysha Chapman played it to the back post in the 82nd minute. Sky Blue keeper Kailen Sheridan got to it, but couldn’t collect it. The ball came out to Rosie White, who hit it just over the crossbar. The best chance the Breakers had came in the 87th minute off the foot of rookie Midge Purce. She took a pass from Brooke Elby in the box, cut in, and got a shot off on goal, but Sky Blue keeper Kalien Sheridan dove to tip it wide.
Sky Blue FC (9-9-2) took an early lead, getting a goal in the fifth minute from Sam Kerr. Breakers keeper Smith came out but Kerr managed to pick up the loose ball and hit it into an empty goal.
The Breakers (3-10-7) had a number of chances in the first half, the first coming prior to the Sky Blue goal. In the third minute, Katie Stengel found Purce on the overlap. Her cross intended for Adriana Leon, however, was blocked in front by Sky Blue defender Mandy Freeman.
In the sixth minute, White lifted a shot on goal from distance, but Sheridan was there to make the save. Stengel put a shot on goal from close range in the 16th minute, receiving a great pass on the go from Tiffany Weimer. Leon put a shot on target in the 22nd minute, but it was stopped by Sheridan.
Smith smashed a ball over the top to Ifeoma Onumonu in the 30th minute. Onumonu nearly got a shot off before Sheridan collected the ball a half second sooner. In the 37th minute, Chapman chipped a ball from 25 yards out, and Sheridan made the stop.
On the other end of the field, after surrendering an early goal, Smith returned to form, making several stops, including a diving stab on Madison Tiernan in the ninth minute and again on Kerr in the 38th minute. She punched out an attempt by Kerr in the 24th minute.
The Breakers head to Orlando Sept. 2. They return home Sept. 10 to face Portland Thorns FC (6 p.m. ET). Tickets to all Boston Breakers home games are available by calling 617-945-1704 or by visiting breakerstickets.com.
