Breakers fall just short in preseason loss to Sky Blue FC

O'Reilly, Sanderson score in 3-2 defeat

The Boston Breakers came back from two one-goal deficits Wednesday night, but a goal in the 75th minute by Canadian international Sophie Schmidt sealed a 3-2 victory for Sky Blue FC at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville.

"The good thing is we got out on the field against a good team. Sky Blue has some great players, and there going to be a team in the league that we have to deal with," Boston Breakers Head Coach Lisa Cole said. "You get out and scrimmage yourself, you scrimmage some college teams, but it's just not the same level. This was important for us. They took advantage of some of our miscues. I thought we created some opportunities and didn't take them well, so both of those need to improve. We need to make a few less mistakes and make sure they don't get to capitalize on them, and we need to make sure we capitalize on our opportunities."

Former Breaker Kelley O’Hara opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, chipping a shot 15 yards out and to the left of goal, just over the outstretched arms of Breakers keeper Colleen Boyd. The Breakers came back to tie the game less than 15 minutes later. Katie Schoepfer found Heather O’Reilly open on the wing, and O’Reilly slotted a shot far post, beating Sky Blue keeper Brittany Cameron. Sky Blue threatened a number of times in the final 10 minutes of the first half, but shots by Schmidt and Brittany Bock went over the bar and a shot by O’Hara careened off the bar.

The Breakers opened the second half applying pressure in the final third. Schoepfer and Canadian forward Adriana Leon both had spot-on crosses cut down in the box. In the 53rd minute, Leon rocketed a shot on goal from inside the 18, but Cameron made a diving stop, knocking the ball out of play.

The game remained tied through 65 minutes - a goal by Sydney Leroux in the 63rd minute was ruled offside - before both teams combined for three goals in a 10-minute span. In the 66th minute, O’Hara headed in a corner kick by Danesha Adams, putting Sky Blue ahead, 2-1. This came just one minute after she had a shot punched out by Boyd.

In the 70th minute, the Breakers pulled level on a goal by Lianne Sanderson. The play unfolded in the right corner, where O’Reilly collected a pass from Libby Guess. O’Reilly then sent in a sharp cross right in front of goal and Sanderson hit it past Cameron to tie the game at two apiece.

But just five minutes later, Schmidt scored the game-winner, taking a feed from Taylor Lytle and putting it past Boyd. With two minutes left in the match, Leroux nearly scored the game-tying goal, but her shot curled just wide of goal.
