(May 14, 2017) – The Boston Breakers got a goal from Rose Lavelle and save off the line by Natasha Dowie on an indirect kick from just a few yards out to preserve a 1-1 tie Sunday at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill.

With the draw, the Breakers moved their record to 2-2-1 and enter week six of NWSL action in fourth place in the league table.

After a scoreless first half and nearly scoreless first 25 minutes of the second half, the Breakers opened up the scoring in the 69th minute. Midfielder Rose Lavelle dribbled nearly the length of the field before pushing it out wide to Margaret Purce. Purce came into the box, beat her defender, and got a shot off, which was blocked. Lavelle pounced on the rebound and struck it into the far side of goal to give the Breakers a 1-0 lead.

The Breakers were called for a back-pass in the 78th minute, resulting in an indirect kick inside the box for Chicago. The Breakers lined up on the goal line for the kick. Keeper Abby Smith raced out in an attempt to block the indirect kick. The ball went to her left, but was stopped on the line by Natasha Dowie.

Chicago equalized in the 89th minute on a header from Christen Press.

The Breakers had a few chances in the first half, but were stymied by Chicago’s defense. Angela Salem and Adriana Leon had shots blocked in front just inside of 20 minutes. Three minutes later, Leon was denied by Alyssa Naeher from close range. Lavelle had a shot blocked in the 32nd minute, and in the 38th minute, Alyssa Chapman chipped a ball from 25 yards out, nearly surprising Naeher at the back post.

On the defending end, Julie King was immense in the first half, making a sliding tackle at the top of the 18 in the 34th minute that prevented a one-on-goal opportunity for Chicago. Early in the second half, Smith made a diving save to keep the game scoreless, one of four saves on the night for the Breakers keeper.

The Breakers return home Friday, May 19, to face the Portland Thorns at 7 p.m. ET at Jordan Field. Tickets to all home games are available by calling 617-945-1704 or by visiting
