(Aug. 4, 2017) — The Boston Breakers tied FC Kansas City, 2-2, Friday night, earning a point in front of 2,510 fans at Jordan Field. A pair of goals from midfielder Rosie White paced the Breakers.

“After the first 10-15 minutes, I thought we settled into the game really well. Rosie’s first (goal) was a great strike and it lifted everyone to finish the half off strongly,” said Boston head coach Matt Beard.

With both teams coming off a loss in their previous game, the will to secure an early lead led to an aggressive start. FC Kansas City (3-7-5) was able to get near the net right away in the second minute, but Angela Salem and Julie King were able to provide solid defense and clear the ball.

Shea Groom gathered the ball at her feet and turned to get a shot off in the sixth minute, but it went to the left of the net.

The Breakers (3-7-6) looked to take an early lead as Morgan Andrews tried to play the ball to Katie Stengel in the box the following minute, but the ball went just by her feet.

Tiffany Weimer received a pass in the 10th minute, but could not quite get her feet in the right spot to take a shot, however she was able to pass to Stengel. The forward sent the ball towards the net but Kansas City goalkeeper Nicole Barnhart was able to get a hand on the ball to slow it and slide it away from the net.

Boston had another close shot in the 19th minute as Allysha Chapman tried to send the ball in the air to Stengel, but Barnhart came out of the goal and grabbed it over her. Barnhart ended the first half with two saves, while Boston goalkeeper Sammy Jo Prudhomme had one.

Desiree Scott took the ball near midfield in the 21st minute and sent off running towards the net to create a chance for FC Kansas City. She was able to find Christina Gibbons, who passed to Maegan Kelly right in front of the goal. She converted to give the Blues a 1-0 lead.

Six minutes later, Adriana Leon found Stengel who passed to an open White outside the box. The New Zealand international sent a shot to the top corner of the net, right above Barnhart’s gloves to tie the game at 1-1.

Following a corner kick and a strong pass from Leon, White scored her second goal of the night in the 30th minute to give the Breakers a 2-1 lead.

Boston kept up the momentum and tried to extend the lead as Stengel was able to find Leon right by the goal line, but the ball bounced off the goal post. The last chance in the first half for Boston came in the 37th minute. After a string of passes by the team, White sent the ball to Chapman, but her shot was over the net.

With a 2-1 lead going into the second half, the Breakers looked to keep the pressure strong. Prudhomme had an easy save early and Megan Oyster was able to clear the ball several times to slow down FC Kansas City.

Amanda Frisbie sent a pass across the field to Weimer, but Barnhart came out of the box to clear the ball in the 51st minute.

FC Kansas City attempted to tie the game four minutes later as they took a free kick. The ball went Kelly who got a shot off, but Prudhomme easily made the save.

Leon had a close chance for the Breakers in the 77th minute when she faked her defender to get around her and sent a strong shot towards the goal, but the ball was tipped away to the left of the net.

After subbing into the game for Katie Bowen in the 70th minute, Erika Tymrak scored the equalizer goal 11 minutes later. She sent a shot from the side of the goal and although Prudhomme made a diving attempt to stop it, but ball went just past her hand.

“It’s a little bit frustrating with the second half, the way that it went,” Beard said. “We started to drop too deep and allow gaps in between the units and unfortunately when you do that … it ends up in the back of the net, so it’s frustrating.”

The Breakers will look to build on this momentum in their next game at Maryland SoccerPlex against the Washington Spirit, Saturday, Aug. 12 at 3:30 p.m. ET. The team returns home the following Wednesday (Aug. 16) to take on the Houston Dash at Jordan Field at 7:30 p.m. ET.
