(April 10, 2017) – The Boston Breakers announced today their roster for the start of the 2017 National Women’s Soccer League season.
Eight players return from last year’s team, including captain and defender Julie King, vice captain and last year’s leading scorer, forward Natasha Dowie, defenders Christen Westphal, Brooke Elby, and Kylie Strom, midfielder Angela Salem, and goalkeepers Abby Smith and Libby Stout.
The 2017 roster features more than a dozen new players, including four of the Breakers five selections in the 2017 NWSL College Draft: midfielder Rose Lavelle (No. 1 overall), midfielder Morgan Andrews (No. 3 overall), forward Ifeoma Onumonu (No. 8 overall), forward Margaret Purce (No. 9 overall), and goalkeeper Sammy Jo Prudhomme (No. 31 overall).
The newcomers also include Canadian international Adriana Leon and New Zealand midfielder Rosie White, who both led the Breakers with four goals and one assist each during the 2017 preseason, Canadian defender and Olympic bronze medalist Allysha Chapman, former Breakers midfielders Amanda Da Costa and Tiffany Weimer, recent U.S. Women’s National team call-up and defender Megan Oyster, Norwegian forward Emilie Haavi, and 2016 Úrvalsdeild champion with Icelandic club Stjarnan, defender Amanda Frisbie.
The Breakers open the 2017 NWSL season Sunday, April 16 on the road against FC Kansas City (6 p.m. ET, Swope Soccer Village). They host Sky Blue FC on Sunday, April 23 (4 p.m. ET) at Jordan Field for their 2017 home opener.
