The Breakers look to make it two in a row Wednesday night when they head out to the West Coast to take on Seattle Reign FC. Coming off a 3-2 victory over Sky Blue FC on Sunday, the Breakers take that momentum to Starfire Stadium for Wednesday’s match at 10 p.m. ET.
In Sunday’s win over first-place Sky Blue FC, the Breakers got a pair of goals from Sydney Leroux, giving her seven on the season, and midfielder Mariah Nogueira, who scored her second in as many games, both on headers. For Leroux, her two goals ties her for second in the league with Abby Wambach, both one back of league-leader Lauren Cheney.
The Breakers and Reign meet for the second time this season. Boston suffered a 2-1 defeat at home on June 26 at Dilboy Stadium in Somerville. Seattle got the the game-tying goal from Jessica Fishlock in the 78th minute and then the game-winning goal from Christine Nairn in the 86th minute. Nogueira scored for Boston.
Seattle, which started the season winless in 11 games, going 0-9-2, have now won two straight and are unbeaten in their last three games. It began with a draw at Western New York, followed by the victory over Boston, and then returning home to beat the Chicago Red Stars, 3-1. The Reign have been boosted by the recent addition of Megan Rapinoe, who returned from her stint with Lyon in France. They also recently acquired Mexican international forward Renae Cuellar from FC Kansas City in exchange for midfielder Teresa Noyola, traded away Lindsay Taylor, and added former Breaker and U.S. Women’s National Team defender Stephanie Cox and former Chicago Red Stars forward Jessica McDonald.
The Breakers not only bring the offensive power of Leroux to Seattle, but head into the game with the league-leader in assists (Lianne Sanderson, who has seven), Heather O’Reilly (3 goals, 2 assists), and Nogueira, Katie Schoepfer, and Joanna Lohman, who each have two goals on the season.
Following Wednesday’s game at Seattle, the Breakers travel to Portland to take on second-place Portland Thorns FC (Saturday, July 6, 10:30 p.m. ET).
