Breakers comeback falls just short in 3-2 loss to Sky Blue FC

In front of a sold-out crowd of 2,687 at Dilboy Stadium Sunday night, the Breakers staged a late comeback, but time ran out before they could come away with a point against visiting Sky Blue FC. The 3-2 loss ended Boston’s four-game unbeaten streak at home and sent their record to 3-4-3 on the season.

With seven minutes of stoppage time and trailing by two goals, the Breakers made a final push and nearly came away with a point. Kyah Simon headed in a Katie Schoepfer cross in the 95th minute, but Sky Blue FC managed to fend off the Breakers for the last two minutes to take the three points and remain tied for first in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) table with the Portland Thorns, who beat the Seattle Reign Sunday, 2-0.

"They’re leading the league, and there’s good reasons why they’re leading the league. I felt like we created chances, but ... our finishing needs to improve," Boston Breakers Head Coach Lisa Cole said. "Chances were there for us. We just weren’t good enough today."

Sky Blue FC (8-2-1) opened the scoring in the 9th minute, taking a pass from Monica Ocampo and curling it around Breakers keeper Ashley Phillips. The New Jersey club took a 2-0 lead in the 26th minute. This time it was Ocampo, who slotted it past Phillips off an assist from Katy Freels.

The Breakers had a few chances to chip away at their deficit but missed by inches. The closest they came to scoring in the first half came late. In the 38th minute, Maddy Evans, slipped a great through ball to Simon in the box, but the ball was just a step ahead of Simon. In the 44th minute, Schoepfer took a shot 15 yards from goal, but it was blocked by Sky Blue FC defender CoCo Goodson.

The Breakers made one change at the half, bringing in keeper Alyssa Naeher for Phillips. It was Naeher’s NWSL debut, but the second time she’s suited up for the Breakers. She last played in Boston during the 2011 Women’s Professional Soccer season.

Looking to get back into the game, had three chances early in the second half, all disrupted by Sky Blue FC keeper Brittany Cameron. Shots by Schoepfer, Simon, and Cat Whitehill

The Breakers pulled one back in the 60th minute on a great overlapping run by Julie King. The play initiated in the midfield by Evans. When King got the ball in the corner, she crossed it to Joanna Lohman, who headed it past Cameron to make it a 2-1 game. For Lohman, it was her second goal of the season.

But Sky Blue FC responded in the 70th minute when Freels buried a shot from the inside of the area to go ahead 3-1. Seven minutes later, it coudl’ve easily turned into a 4-1 game had it not been for Whitehill covering for Naeher, who came off her line. Whitehill cleared a shot off the line by Adams at the near post.

The Breakers scored their second goal of the night in stoppage time. Seven minutes were added due to an injury sustained by Naeher. Simon’s goal in the 95th minute brought the Breakers one step closer, but time ran out and Sky Blue FC took the victory.

The Breakers return to action June 26 to take on Seattle at home.
